Suite by the sea
Southern Ocean Lodge put the Kangaroo Island coast right outside my Flinders Suite. I could sit with the waves in view for a while, then join the great room for a drink from its open self-service bar. The drive from Kingscote Airport was close to an hour, so there was no casual town dinner around the corner.
Rebuilt lodge & room
The lodge has been rebuilt, which makes the current suite plan more useful than memories of the older building. Space and a comfortable place to sit mattered when weather invited an afternoon indoors. I liked knowing that the view would still be there even when an outing was off.
Meals & guided nature
Meals, drinks and many guided trips could come with the stay, though the exact inclusions needed checking. A guide who knew where to look for sea lions made an island outing far more interesting than driving between viewpoints myself. I also asked how dinner menus changed over several nights; with no easy alternative nearby, variety mattered.
Would I return?
A few days of coast and guided nature would be worth repeating from a suite built for time indoors too. When the suite and excursions suited the weather, the isolation felt like the reward rather than something to work around.
