Coast & lodge room
Kauri Cliffs gave me more than a golf course. The distant islands and broad stretch of coastline made staying another night appealing even before I decided whether to play. A walk over the lawns was a good way to use a morning without booking a round. A room with a view I actually wanted to sit with mattered as much as the estate's famous fairways.
Pool & breakfast
The lodge's quieter scale made breakfast feel familiar quickly. I liked the outdoor pool's coastal outlook, though the gym and spa were small; neither would fill an entire wet afternoon. Staff could help with plans, but a bedroom that worked for several nights was still the foundation of the stay.
Golf & budget
Golf called for an honest budget. A round for two with carts has approached NZ$1,000, and keeping carts to the paths made covering the course more work than the price might suggest. I would ask about both before planning repeated rounds. Dinner deserved its own care too; a server unable to explain a dish took something away from an otherwise handsome dining room.
Would I return?
The coast is worth returning for with enough time to explore the grounds beyond a single round of golf. That quiet, not just the scorecard, is what made the lodge memorable to me.
