MY STAY
The Azabudai Hills base
Janu Tokyo felt lively rather than hushed, which suited its spot in Azabudai Hills. The market, food hall and shops were close enough to use on an ordinary day without setting off across town. I liked being able to retreat to my spacious room with proper storage afterward. It is not trying to be the withdrawn sanctuary that the related Aman hotels can be.

Fitness & pool
I found the fitness spaces a real reason to stay in: a 25-meter pool, boxing ring, yoga room and even a golf simulator. I made time for a swim instead of treating the list as decoration. A taxi arranged through the hotel could carry a separate booking charge, so the full car price was worth asking about.

Dinner & city food
At Hu Jing, jasmine tea and Sichuan-style poached chicken gave dinner a distinct flavor; the shops below offered something quicker another day. Janu Bar worked for a cocktail and a Tokyo Tower view, although a window table was not something to assume without a reservation.

Would I return?
The combination of a serious gym and easy daily life in Azabudai Hills is worth another stay. The room was quiet enough when needed, but the pleasure of this hotel was being able to move between it and an active part of Tokyo without planning every errand.
