Gardens & scale
Grand Wailea is enormous, and I enjoyed it most when I stopped expecting a quiet little hideaway. The gardens, winding paths and elaborate pools made it possible to spend a day in different parts of the resort. A balcony with a good outlook was a welcome pause between them; a room far from the pool or lift would make every trip longer.
Pools & crowds
The pools were fun and busy. Towels could be in demand before breakfast, and an empty chair in the adults-only area was not guaranteed just because I arrived. When the noise caught up with me, heading for the beach or the room worked better than waiting for everyone else to leave.
Food & extra costs
Warm bar staff helped, but meals and extras added up quickly. A pool cocktail has been $22 and nachos $28; current prices and resort charges deserve a look before ordering the whole day's food there. Booking through a third party can also complicate food credits. The refreshed lobby looked grander than some of the older rooms and hallways.
Would I return?
Pools and gardens make Grand Wailea an active Maui holiday, provided the room and full bill suit that plan. Paying the same bill simply to sleep here and find a quiet lounger would miss the point.
