Lava coast & the room
Hualalai stayed with me for its black lava and the number of ways to spend a day beside the water. King's Pond had fish to watch, not just tiles to swim past. I kept moving between the quieter pool, the shoreline and a balcony that looked over the pond toward the ocean.
The view & dinner
That particular view was worth choosing. An ocean-facing room elsewhere on the grounds would have started the day differently. Dinner at Beach Tree, almost on the sand, suited the setting more than an evening spent inside a grand dining room.
Check-in & housekeeping
The details were not all as smooth as the landscape. A mixed-up check-in, a celebration card with the wrong name and ants in an uncleaned bathroom would each be small problems to fix, but together they felt out of place at this price. At 'Ulu, a table still set with used cutlery needed attention too. I would raise any of those things straight away rather than hope they disappeared on their own.
Would I return?
Hualalai is an expensive way to see Hawaii Island, and one night would barely let the place unfold. I'd go back for several days of pond, lava coast and unhurried meals, with a room view that makes returning between swims feel like part of the holiday.
